FOODIE Note: I am very sorry to say that the January/February 2014 issue of Tastebud Magazine was the last. Editor and owner Jennifer and Gordon Roe just could no longer keep up with the demand of the magazine, and have been trying to sell the publication to a buyer who would love it as much as they do. I have been with the magazine since the beginning, proudly writing the Table Hopping Column for over 8 years. Jennifer and Gordon were the first to give me a platform for my rapidly growing passion for food and restaurants and for that I am eternally grateful. I wish them much luck in their next great adventure. I plan to continue to write my columns and publish them here on my blog, until I find a new magazine to write for. This would have been my March column. I'm going to try to catch the blog up over the next month. I hope you enjoy.

Owners, Jeremy and Michelle Schepmann had collective dreams of running a bakery one day, after years of working in bakeries and practicing their skills at home. So, they jumped at the chance to open their own European-style bakery in one of the oldest historic buildings downtown. In addition to the delicious bread, the couple brought with them top-drawer pastry talent in Chef Cater Holton and Chef Julie Steele, and Barbara Shaw of Au Bon Macaron who provides the endless colors of macaons available. With an inviting décor, a barista, and full bar available, you’ll find plenty of places to sit and grab a coffee or a glass of wine to enjoy with these seasonal pastries. Try the ham & gruyere croissant, $4.50, or get any of the gorgeous “dome shaped” desserts in rotating flavors for a truly decadent treat. Meet your new early day hideaway in downtown KC. BEST: to get there for breakfast or lunch as the bakery is open from 7 am – 2 pm Tuesday – Friday, and Saturday from 8 am – 2 pm. Closed Sunday & Monday.

Frank Sebree, owner of The Majestic Restaurant, bought the old Napoleon Bakery in Westport and decided to re-open it as a new restaurant and bakery called, Baked in Kansas City. I know, I know, you can’t help but giggle at the name, with but serious pastry talent in the form of Chef Nicolette Foster & Joey Phillips, and Chef Pete Peterman as the bread baker the place will certainly live up to it’s name. Although the restaurant serves lunch and dinner, their real calling is as a brunch spot or a place to land with a friend for a pastry and a coffee. For brunch, get the prime beef hash and grits featuring The Majestic’s prime rib, roasted garlic grits, a poached egg and Hollandaise sauce for $11. As for the bakery, Chef Nicole is hoping her chocolate, peanut butter, salted caramel creation called Baked in KC Candy Bar will put her on the map, but don’t miss out on some of the more traditional items like the lemon meringue tart and the French madeleine. SIT: Outside on the right-sized outdoor patio, when the weather allows It’s the perfect spot to sun and watch the world go by.

Co-owners Stan Yoder, and tandoori bread baker, Foad Salih, opened Bread for All in 2012 in Westport as simply a Middle Eastern bakery specializing in the chewy tandoori flat breads. They had walk-in patrons and sold wholesale to markets. Finally when they decided to add the café, serving traditional Middle Eastern cuisine, along with their fluffy breads, that’s when they saw their business boom. Packed with Middle Easterners looking for a tasty bite of home, they are serving some of the best chicken sharwarma in the city on their platter served with hummus and either lentil soup or a house salad to start all for around $10. You also get a piece of their heavenly tandoori baked bread. Order the house hot tea. With a touch of mint and spices, you will dream about that tea for days afterward. WATCH: through out the day, as they make the bread in a separate baking room to see how tandoori baking is done first hand.

Young gun Dylan Jones, and his partner Brad Killen, opened Scratch Bakery in 2013 as a wholesale business, selling to over 20 different restaurants and coffee shops around the metro area, but earlier this year they decided to open the café portion in the historic garment district downtown and they have been making “scratch” ever since. These two also bake wonderful wedding cakes and will cater your lunch meetings. Moist muffins are what they are most known for, but for lunch slide in there for a slice of their house made pizza. DRINK: local. Scratch Bakery is proudly serving Hugo Tea and Oddly Correct coffee.
