Jacqueline Buycks and her sister Joyce Brown own Big Momma’s Bakery. They opened their original shop in Raytown, MO in 2005, and were then courted to move their shop to Crown Center bringing their sister Jill’s world famous cinnamon roll recipe with them. But around Thanksgiving the sister’s cinnamon rolls take a back seat to their fluffy homemade dinner rolls, which have developed a serious cult-like following this time of year. PRE-ORDER: your Big Momma’s dinner rolls by the dozen now using their online order form. Dinner rolls for Thanksgiving are sold by pre-order only. There are no walk-in dinner rolls available to purchase around the holidays.

Pastry Chef Megan Garrelts, co-owner of Bluestem and Rye, located in Mission Farms Shopping Center is a top-notch pastry talent in this town. At Rye, her desserts are more comforting and homey with seasonal ingredients at the forefront. These are the desserts of the region, of the grandmothers of Missouri if they used the best and freshest ingredients. Call and ask about their seasonal pies that change frequently. Megan will offer all of your favorite seasonal pies around Thanksgiving, with a few favorites of her own. PRE-ORDER: Simply call the restaurant and inquire on ordering whole pies. They will give you a list of the seasonal pies to choose from, and take your order over the phone. Then you can swing in to pick them up . . .and maybe stay for dinner while you are at it.

Many independently owned restaurants close on Thanksgiving to be with their families. The good news is there are several who are open and serving wonderful traditional Thanksgiving feasts for you and your family to enjoy, and cozy Julian in Brookside is one of them. From the beginning, Chef Celina Tio has kept Julian open on Thanksgiving serving a traditional 3-course family style meal for $35 per person for those lucky enough to snag a table.
