When Christopher Elbow started serving ice cream
out of his chocolate shop last summer, everyone took notice. Clearly, our local
chocolatier was using us to taste test flavors in preparation of opening his
new artisan ice cream shop, Glacé.
This shiny new shop is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. His ice creams
and sorbets, like his chocolates, surprise with bursts of flavor and herb and
spice notes. The ice cream is decadently creamy and the perfect texture. Try
Goat Cheese with Cherry, Basil-Lime Sorbet, Salted Pretzel, Sweet Corn and
Horchata. Welcome to your new addiction. MIX: and match, you can squeeze two flavors into a
small cup or three into a regular to get a chance to sample them all.

Ken Shaffer, owner of Cirque
d’Alex, worked for many years perfecting his ice cream recipe, he just needed a
name for it. For that, he looked no further than his daughter, Alex, for
inspiration. The quality of the ingredients in the ice cream really sets this
place apart from the pack. Try Burnt Sugar, Sweet Cream, Mexican Coffee or
Pistachio. They also offer the more unusual, ice cream flavors with alcohol in
them. Have your drink and eat it too. They offer flavors like Pina Colada,
Trappist Monk and Brandy Alexandra. TRY:
a vegetarian chili dog, as this place is getting high marks for them with the
vegetarian crowd. They also feature all-beef and turkey dogs along with
bratwurst in Chicago, Coney or New York style.

Arturo Fernandez, owns
and operates this very nice little Mexican snack shop over in Kansas City, KS
that serves up traditional Mexican ice creams and paletas,
or frozen fruit bars, along with a wide
selection of tacos, tortas and the like. The help behind the counter is happy
to give you samples of anything if you are struggling with the names of the ice
creams in Spanish. Flavors to try are Coconut (best I’ve had anywhere), Rum
Raisin and Pine Nut , which is a pink cherry flavored ice cream that is studded
with pine nuts. FRIDAYS: get the special of the day, the intriguing Hamburgesa
Chihuahua for $4.99 that looks to have sliced ham, bacon, all-beef patty,
lettuce, tomatoes and jalapeños on it. Pig out!

In an area of town that is
lacking locally owned eats, Aunt Jean’s is a shining beacon of light. Owner,
Tim Jones and Jeaneane Raab have boldly opened their gelato and sorbet shop and
are quietly making a name for themselves on the west side of town. Located in
the heart of downtown Shawnee, look for the crowds on the outdoor patio and
you’ll know you are in the right spot. They spend a lot of time dreaming up new
and exciting flavors. Try the Caramel Pear, Banana Nut Bread, Pink Grapefruit
Sorbet and their signature flavor Celebration Cake, that I swear has real cake
batter in the gelato. Delicious. KNOW:
that Aunt Jean’s only offers what they do best - gelato, sorbet and drinks. Not
a problem for someone who loves to eat dessert first.
Great to see Aunt Jean's get some love! They do a fabulous job.

I love Aunt Jeans...and eat local for the whole meal but first having a burger at Bam's Burger's around the corner on Nieman and then heading to Aunt Jeans.
