July 2008 Table Hopping

From my column in Tastebud Magazine
Table Hopping - July 2008
“Vegetarian places so good, you’ll never miss the meat!”

Eden Alley Eden Alley

In the lower level of the Unity Temple on The Plaza, you will find KC’s oldest and best vegetarian/vegan/raw/gluten-free restaurant in KC. Started by two friends in 1994, Sandi Corder-Clootz, an original owner, continues to operate the wide open, light and whimsical restaurant today with her husband Greg Clootz.  The restaurant is as colorful as the variety of food on your plate with local art on the walls and tables. Try the Spinach and Mushroom Loaf made from multi-grain bread crumbs, fresh spinach, mushrooms, rice and tofu topped with tomato-basil marinara with roasted sweet potatoes for $6.25, an ample half order. SAMPLE: around the menu with the Tantalizing Transcendent Triplet and get an appetizer or soup and two smaller portioned entrées for $18.

Off 31st street and around the block from You Say Tomato is KC’s newest all vegan and mostly organic restaurant. Owners Diallo and Africka Kenyatta opened Café Seed in January, after moving here from NYC where they had a successful bookstore that served vegan food. The little place is a warm modern space with colorful artwork on the walls and tribal music playing. Choose the BLT with the soup of the day for $7.95, and be surprised at the flavor in the crispy soy bacon with butter lettuce and red ripe organic tomatoes on sprouted whole wheat toast. The soup on my visit was a creamy smooth black bean soup with a hint of the aromatic spice. START: your day in a healthy way with made-to-order organic juices or 100% vegan smoothies $4-$6, open weekdays at 7:00 am.

Blue Bird Cafe Blue Bird Bistro
1700 Summit Street
Kansas City, MO 64108
(816) 221-7559 http://www.kansascitymenus.com/bluebirdbistro/

Known for their quality and commitment to buying their ingredients straight from local farmers and producers, owner, Jane Zieha-Bell, took the original concept which was upscale vegetarian, and expanded it by adding a few meat dishes, using only the finest free-range chicken and grass-fed beef. However, the vegetarian dishes are still very much on the menu and a focus here. Try the Risotto topped with oyster mushrooms and caramelized onions for $19 or the Green Curry Vegetables with organic coconut milk for $11. Order from their mostly organic wine list, and see if you can taste the difference. AFTER: Your meal, Thursday – Saturday, stop in next door and pick up fantastically fresh artisan bread from the Fervere Bakery.

The Mixx

White-collar types, book lovers from the library next door and mid-town monied Mom’s are all in The Mixx. Come here for the best designer salad bar in town. Chef/Owner, Jo Marie Scaglia, hires professional Chefs who hand-make your salad from the freshest vegetables available then toss them with wonderful designer dressings – try the non-fat Pear Ginger Vinaigrette. Order The Mixx salad and get your choice of greens with five mix-in’s (over 33 ingredients) and your choice of dressing with a slice of fresh bread for $7.49. Once you are done ordering and paying, enjoy people-watching in the modern dining room which does a brisk business at lunch. LOOK: at their menu online before you dine, because you are expected to order as soon as you arrive.

Al Habashi Habashi House
309 Main Street
Kansas City, MO 64105
(816) 421-0414

http://www.habashihouse.com/

Tawfiq and Salha Al-habashi opened the Al-habashi Market, in 1992, in the heart of the City Market. A Middle Eastern grocery store featuring an impressive array of nuts, dried fruits, herbs and spices. In 2000, they expanded next door and opened a restaurant called Habashi House featuring the food of their culture. Their number #1 selling dish, also happens to be entirely vegetarian, is the House Combo for $6.99. It’s a great introduction to middle eastern cuisine featuring – Hummus, Baba Ghanouj, Dawali (Dolmas), Falafil patties and a choice of salad with pita bread on the side. The service is fast and friendly, and the food is authentic and tasty. OPEN: only for lunch 11:00 am – 2:00 pm Monday-Friday, but on Friday and Saturdays they are open until 7:00 pm. Closed on Sunday.

June 2008 Table Hopping

Table Hopping  - June 2008
“Sandwiches you need to get your hands on!”

Longboards Longboards
6269 North Oak Trafficway
Kansas City, MO 64118
(816) 454-0008
http://www.kclongboards.com

Located in a strip mall up north, is a fun little hideout called Longboards, named after the surfboards that decorate the walls. Owner, Gilbert Macapagal, looks like the food he makes: intense, portable and packing a punch. Dive in; the food is excellent and ripping with wild sweet and spicy Asian flavor. Cool and Hot Wraps or Bowls are filled with rice and your choice of fillings – try the Thai Chicken, Cabo Beef, Pork Luao or Wow! Kung Pao for $6. DRINK:  What the regulars do and get the iced Thai tea to round out your meal.

Happy Gillis Happy Gillis
549 Gillis Street
Kansas City, MO 64106
816-471-3663
http://www.happysoupeater.com

Go now to Columbus Park, and eat at Todd Schulte, and his wife, Tracy Zinn’s, charming little place called Happy Gillis. Todd has been doing a home delivery soup business for years, when he finally decided to open a cafe where you could eat his soup and get a sandwich too. Breakfast and lunch are both offered. As satisfying as the soups are here, you must try one of his winningly simple but gourmet sammies, all between $6-$8. Recommended choices are the Webster City BLT, Muffaletta or even the tasty Banh Mi. CHECK: Out the Happy Soupeater’s daily selection of soups to-go in the refrigerated case next to the register and snag some soup to take home with you.

Mario's Mario’s Grinder Co. & Café
204 Westport Road
Kansas City, Missouri 64111
(816) 531-7187
http://www.marioswestport.com/

The owner of Mario’s Grinder Co., John Waid, has made some changes to the old place in Westport, but the Grinders are still the best in the city. John comes from good restaurant stock as his family owned all of the original Waid restaurants. Taste the crunchy Italian bread they hollow out to make room for the zesty tomato sauce, your choice of meat and a block of molten lava mozzarella cheese. The sandwiches are then plugged with a “cork” of bread to keep all of the ingredients inside. For as taste of the old country, get either the Meatball or Sausage Grinder for around $6 and remember what real homemade meatballs taste like. IN: a hurry? Mario’s now has a separate entrance for people wanting just to order and go.

Kitty's Kitty's Cafe
810 E. 31st Street
Kansas City, MO 64109
(816) 753-9711

There are plenty of good greasy sandwiches on the menu at the SRO restaurant Kitty’s Café, but there is only one so life changingly good that you actually hear angels sing and harps play when you eat it. That sandwich is the Pork Tenderloin. The sign on the outside of the building says Kitty’s Café – since 1951 best Tenderloins in town. Believe it. For a little less than $5, enjoy three hand-battered, deep-fried to a golden brown pork tenderloins placed between two soft buns topped with tomato and lettuce and a spicy Sriracha-based sauce. The original Kitty, an Asian woman, passed away many years ago, but the recipe for her secret light and crispy Asian style fry batter lives on with the new owner, Khamsone Soulivong. COME: With your game face on and bring a friend, as this area can produce some really colorful characters.

Pizza Man The Pizza Man
10212 Pflumm Road
Lenexa, KS 66215
(913) 492-2116

If you hail from the Windy City, this hidden gem is where you’ll happily find a taste of home. Tucked in the middle of a completely forgettable strip center next to the Stonewall Inn you will find The Pizza Man. Try the absolutely authentic Chicago Hot Dogs “dragged through the garden” for $3 or Italian Beef Sandwiches (dipped or not) served with a side of giardiniera pepper relish and beef au jus for $5. Oh, and they also serve Chicago style thin crust pizza, but with sandwiches this good you may never even get to the pizza. Icy cold bottled beer is also available, which is a lovely bonus on a hot day. SIT:  Outside if the weather allows, they will bring your food right out to your table and let the fresh air stimulate your appetite.

“Flippin’ over Burgers!”

Blanc Blanc Burgers + Bottles

http://www.myspace.com/burgerandbottle

Eddie Crane, Ernesto Peralta and Jenifer Price, along with new partner Chef Josh Eans, also owners of The Drop on Martini Corner, are working their magic again. This time in Westport, capitalizing on the red hot trend of the gourmet burger bar.  A sleek, all white interior with exposed brick walls are a comforting contrast, making this a hot place to eat or a cool bar to have a drink. With handcrafted ½ lb. tenderloin burgers and a 150 bottled beer list, you will want to do both. Splurge, order the American Kobe Burger with port onions, mustard aioli, truffle butter, watercress on a buttery brioche bun by Farm to Market Bread for $12. ENJOY: Custard milkshakes made from creamy hometown Foo’s custard and Shatto Milk for the most delicious “local” shake around.

Superstar Chef/Owner Rob Dalzell continues to amaze with his fourth concept chefBurger, one of the few local haunts in the KCP&L District. Dalzell worked for the famous Taylor’s Automatic in Napa Valley when he was a culinary student, and there learned the art of making the perfect burger. You can expect nothing less than that level of taste and quality when you visit his 60’s retro cool burger joint. Light and bright, Dalzell is serving wine and beer along with a tempting list of spiked milkshakes, but this place is less of a watering hole and more of a dining hall. Start basic with the Chef Burger with your choice of cheese for $5.99 and wonder how he cuts perfectly square iceberg lettuce for your burger. CHOOSE: unusual sides over regular choices, with sweet potato fries and fried green beans topping the list.

Westport_flea_market Westport Flea Market Bar & Grill

Voted KC’s best burger 22 years in a row, “The Flea” was once at risk of being destroyed for a Hooter’s. Enter our hero, Joe Zwillenberg, owner of Joe Joe’s Italian Eatery and Joe’s Burgers both on Main Street, who bought and saved this funky outpost. He hasn’t changed a thing, and when you taste their famous burgers you will know why. A Flea Market Burger is 10 oz. of ground chuck from McGonigle’s, only $7.49 including curly fries. Dress it your way at their toppings bar. VISIT: on “Two for Tuesdays” when the regulars pack the place for “two for the price of one” on Mini (um, made with 5 ½ oz. of meat) Market Burgers and curly fries, 5 pm to close.

Max Max’s Burgers & Gyros
8240 Wornall Road

Kansas City, MO 64114

816-444-6297
http://maxsburgersandgyros.com/

The original owner of Max’s Auto Diner passed away in 2005, leaving his restaurant to carry forward in name, but now with a Greek twist. Max’s Burgers & Gyros is a tiny testament to how good meat grilled over an open flame can be. Blame it on the original Greek souvlaki, or the British who visited the islands, but people of Greek descent typically can cook a mean hamburger. Max’s is no exception, if you like more of a flame-broiled burger. Get the Big Max Burger with cheese, only $5.40, with shredded lettuce, red onion, tomato and dill pickle. TAKE: it to-go, place your order then hit the road, the inside dining area is really only big enough to hold the people coming to get their food.

Hiboy Hi-Boy Drive-In

Independence, MO 64055

http://www.hiboydrivein.com

When Larry and Cheryl Comer bought two of the Hi-Boy locations in 1991, with Jim Messick buying the third on Blue Ridge Cut Off from the original owner, they promised to carry on the tradition of making great burgers and sponsoring local baseball teams. Today, they still deliver on both. Thin patty style burgers are some of the best in KC and the most famous player to have worn the Hi-Boy uniform is St. Louis Cardinal, Albert Pujols. Order the ¼ lb. Hi-Boy Burger with their cravable Hi-Boy sauce, pickle, onion, lettuce, tomato and cheese for only $3.89. Onion Rings must sit on the side here. ORDER: between 2 pm to 4 pm and get your soft drinks for half price, during their version of Happy Hour.

Perched over-looking the Missouri River sits the gorgeous Blufftop Bistro, a restaurant designed by the son of Curtis and Martha Bourgeois who started the vineyard. Drive in for a late lunch and enjoy the views as you sip a glass of wine and nosh on a local artisan cheese plate for $12. Try the Tuna Nicoise sandwich (around $14) and get chunks of fresh tuna seared on the outside, pink on the inside, a crunchy baguette dressed with hard boiled egg, olive salad, lettuce, red onion and tomato. Enjoy with it a side of soup, mine had cauliflower, sea scallops and bacon. Located on picturesque Lake Lotawana, this restaurant, which used to be an old marina, serves traditional high-quality steak and seafood with a tropical twist with an impressive wine list backing it all up. It is serious dining, but with waterfront views you simply cannot get in the city. Get the “Taste of Two” and choose from 12 different combinations of steak and seafood on one plate. PICK: A beautiful Spring evening and call for reservations and request a table on the outdoor deck. Nothing compares to that view paired with their food, nothing.

http://www.krausedining.com/

Being named 11th in Food & Wine magazine 100 Best of 2008 – Kansas’s Food Scene, Chef Robert and Molly Krause are not resting on their laurels, you see they have a dinner to plan, prepare and serve out of their home restaurant 5 nights a week to 30 people a night. With a single meal that changes daily depending on the season, what is fresh and the whim of the Chef, they only ask that you sit and enjoy the intimate experience of being served a professionally prepared dinner in their personal yet striking home environment. Six courses are served which is usually $80 per person without liquor. It is worth every penny for the unique experience and talent that we have in this couple in Lawrence.  LINGER: After your meal and for an opportunity to meet Chef Robert in person, as he has been known to come out for a glass of wine when his shift is over.

Cafe_de_amis_crepe_suzette Café de Amis

http://www.cafedesamiskc.com

Opening his restaurant on the corner of quaint Main Street in Parkville suits Provence native, Didier Combe, as this location brings back memories of home. The vibe in this upstairs space with its lovely tree-lined outdoor deck is intimate, romantic and memorable. Top that off with the charming service and terrific French cuisine, and you will see why this place is a hidden gem. Order the Chef’s special of the day, which in my case was the Bouillabaisse, a French seafood stew made of fish, shellfish, onions, tomatoes and white wine. The duck was also delicious for $24. French wine is what to drink here. GO: To the single uni-sex bathroom during your visit for a hilarious dose of French color and humor.

There is so much good barbeque that can be had in Kansas City that it must be hard for the little guys to ever get noticed. Drive south to Spring Hill, KS (about 199th) and you will find K&M, with a recent upgrade in location, but clearly good solid BBQ. Their huge pork ribs slathered in sauce, sliced beef, pork and house made sausage will bring out the meat-lover in you. Try the Deluxe Dinner and get ribs, 2 meats and 2 sides of your choice for $10. Get ready, portions are Brontosaurus big. Order house made coleslaw and fried cauliflower with cheese as sides. DINE: On Saturdays, for a delicious Burnt Ends feast.

February 2008 Table Hopping

February 2008 Table Hopping - from my column in Tastebud Magazine
“Places you’ll fall in love with on 39th Street!”

Mamas Mama’s 39th Street Diner
39th & Southwest Trafficway
Kansas City, MO 64108
(816) 531-6422

Picking up the torch at the iconic Nichol’s lunch location is “Mama” Jan Imber and Ira Auerbach, the owners of the 10-year-old Bell Street Mama’s diner on 39th Street, who have moved their business to this new historic location. With a fantastically large menu with everything from breakfast dishes to burgers, New York style deli sandwiches to traditional Italian dishes you are guaranteed to find something you’ll love in the home cooking here. Choose from one of Mama’s 66 different types of omelets served with hash browns or grits and toast or a biscuit for around $8. SAVE: Room for a cinnamon roll or cake sliced bigger than your head, view the tempting selection rotating inside the case at the front door.

Aladdains Aladdin Cafe
3903 Wyoming Street
Kansas City, 64111
(816) 531-5982

For owner Mohammed Iskandrani and his younger brother, Mazen, this is Aladdin’s second outpost. The first location is on Massachusetts in Lawrence, which the brothers purchased from the owners of Jerusalem Café. Come here and order any dish that features their silky hummus or succulent lamb and you will not be disappointed, as these are signature items. Try the Petra Platter featuring roughly ground beef and lamb sautéed with onions, green peppers and tomatoes served on top of their creamy hummus. Comes with your choice of Greek Salad or a rich, flavorful pureed Lentil soup and a basket of warm, herb studded pita bread for about $7. DRINK: Rose Lemonade for a soft, floral take on traditional lemonade made with lemons, rosewater and a pinch of saffron.

http://www.posdumplingbar.com/

You are in good hands when the owner, Po Hwang, is your server and his wife, Ow, is in charge of the kitchen. Po’s is trying hard to cater to palates of all types, but ask the owner for his authentic Asian favorites on his menu and you will enjoy tender dumplings and home cooked Chinese dishes, just like, well, Po’s Mom used to make. Do not miss the Emperor’s Dumplings, get 6 pan-fried dumplings with savory filling of your choice for $6. Mao Po Tofu with ground pork and Beef with Tomato over rice are both around $10 and excellent. TELL: Po you like it hot and spicy and he will be happy to dial up the heat on any dish.

Chefs and owners Ted Habiger and Andrew Sloan worked together at Café Allegro, a 39th street legend, before opening their own place which has now grown to include a second location in Leawood. Focusing on seasonal, fresh and locally grown ingredients, they opened to rave reviews and continue to deliver in their laid back and cozy dining room. For lunch, get their award-winning Room 39 Burger or the Veggie Burger, both amazingly thick and satisfying, comes with terrific “roommade” fries for $8. At dinner, you truly can do no wrong, with all entrees around $23. OPEN: Late night, Tuesdays and Thursdays, for Happy Hour from 9:30 pm to 12:30 pm with tempting food and drink specials.

Friends Friends Sushi and Bento Place
1808 W. 39th Street
Kansas City, MO 64111

Owners and happy hosts, Paul and Lilly Zhu, are originally from Shanghai, China, but since Lilly’s parents ran a Japanese noodle shop in Shanghai, she admits Japanese food is in her blood. Come to this little jewel box of a restaurant and experience the fun of customizing your own bento box – small box with individual spaces for 4-5 different dishes traditionally eaten during lunch. For only $8 – you get a small lettuce salad with your choice of dressing, fried spring rolls or rice, two pieces of Nigiri sushi of your choice and a sushi roll of your choice along with Onion soup or traditional Miso soup. The sushi is also excellent and the Daikon roll for $9 should not be missed. COME: On Monday nights from 5-9 pm for their Sushi Specials: $1 Nigiri and $4 Sushi Rolls.

Beef_capaccio_justus Justus Drugstore
106 W. Main Street
Smithville, MO 64089

http://www.drugstorerestaurant.com/

An innovative, modern restaurant opening in an old drugstore on Main Street in Smithville is a juxtaposition. But it makes perfect sense to Executive Chef and Owner Jonathan Justus and his wife Camille Eklof, to recycle a building that his family already owned. A cozy affair, with a lovely bar, and an open kitchen that glows at night makes the decor magical. The food is excellent, yet inexpensive, made more desirable after listening to Chef Jonathan describe how the goat cheese in your salad was purchased from a local woman which he dipped into honey infused with rose petals picked from his garden. It is his way to get you to slow down, enjoy, and celebrate the bounty local food can provide. Must try dishes are Mushroom Soup for $7 and Pork Two Ways for $20. VISIT: The restaurant during the week when things are not as hectic and really converse with the Chef.
