Owner, Chef Joe Birch, has successfully operated Avenues Bistro on the corner of Brookside for over eight years with only a front door and a sign overhead marking his restaurant’s presence. You might not have even realized it, but Avenues Bistro has operated all these years with virtually no windows in the restaurant.
Last week all of that changed as Birch, and his entire team at Avenues Bistro, got their holiday present early as they proudly showed off their new restaurant remodel, including a new bar and lounge area called L’Cove, pronounced “alcove,” that features a big bright bank of street-facing windows that will open to let the breeze in when the weather is nice.
Interior designer, Eric Negrete, was the vision behind the three month remodel which basically absorbed about 1,200 square feet of space from the newly vacated Baskin-Robbins that had for years been located right next door. The new owners of the Baskin-Robbins decided to relocate to other side of Brookside, which allowed Birch to sweep in and rent the space giving him a bigger footprint, but more importantly the natural light and the street exposure he always dreamed of having for his restaurant.
In addition to this cool and casual new lounge area, the dining room also received a make-over, with a lighter paint color and beautiful overhead accent lights, everything about this remodel has brought a airiness to the space that was lacking before. It is a wholly remarkable transformation.
The menu too, developed by Birch and his Executive Chef Mario Galan, has changed for the first time in years moving away from larger and heavier entrees to a more flexible small plates style of eating. Share or not, the worldly tasting plates are fresher and lighter, with portions and pricing more in line with a shareable snacking or simply sensible eating.
There is also a Secret Menu that will only be available online. It is a menu that will be updated seasonally with special Chef creations or favorite menu items that are back to make a short-term appearance. Just like In-N-Out’s secret “animal-style” burger, you will have to review the secret menu online and then confidently order your secret menu selection from your wait staff. They will give you big props for being an Avenues Bistro insider.
The new L’Cove Lounge features a new cocktail menu featuring locally owned J. Reiger Whiskey and Dark Horse Distillery spirits. There is also an excellent selection of wine and craft beers to choose from.
“Many people, even today, who live in the Brookside neighborhood don’t realize that we are here, and ready to serve them,” Joe said. “Taking over this space and building out the L’Cove Lounge finally gives us the street presence we always wanted.”
