Bill Teel and Steve Greer, the owners of the Golden Ox, have preserved this landmark in an untouched, frozen in time, kind of way. You sense the history of the days when the cattlemen would roll in from the Livestock Exchange and order the steak named after our own city. Pay a visit to one of the last true steakhouses in Kansas City. The value for a family is that your starter and side dishes are included in the price of your entrée. No a la carte to worry about here. Get the 12 oz. Kansas City Strip, side salad and a stuffed baked potato for $29. DINE: on Friday nights, when the Ox offers delicious all-you-can-eat fried shrimp for only $22, with soup/salad and a side of your choice.

Owner, Erika Koike, opened her first restaurant, One Bite Japanese, in south JoCo, but she soon realized she needed to reach a more diverse and urban audience. Sama Zama, which means “varied” in Japanese, is her new location in Westport. Her exposed and distressed brick walls and streamlined Asian décor seems much more of a fit on Westport’s new restaurant row. The menu is basically the same as One Bite, with a few additions. Get her Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen (dine-in only) for $13. Try the Classic Okonomi Yaki, $12. Layers of crepe, egg & meat topped with Asian sauces. BRING: Friends and family in to dine, tables can be pushed together and these Japanese small plates are meant to share.

When your parents own the building where Westport Coffeehouse and Theater is located, and you happen to want to open a burger and beer stand . . .you call it luck. Michael Ptacek, is the lucky owner of the new Green Room Burgers & Beer located around the back of the Westport Coffeehouse with plenty of parking on the side of the building. Focusing on local ingredients for his burgers and hand-cut french fries, he also has his eye on keeping his food value priced, perfect for families. GET: the Classic Cheeseburger for $5 or the 4010 for $7 that has sliced avocado, thick-cut bacon, jalapeno slices and mustard. A basket of fries, perfect for sharing is only $6.

Zach Marten and Bret Springs both had ties to KC and restaurant experience when they inked the first franchise deal with the owner of Coal Vines in Dallas to open on the corner of the Country Club Plaza. With a sweet location and delicious New York style pizza, cooked in their namesake coal oven, they already have much to offer a hungry family. But consider this place for brunch, as well, served Sundays from 11 am – 3 pm. With an interesting selection of breakfast items, pizzas and salads there is something for everyone. YOU: must order the Captain Crunch French Toast with whipped cream and fresh strawberries at brunch. It sounds crazy, but you will enjoy the nostalgia and the flavor of this absolutely unique breakfast item.

Frank Gazella Jr. and Andrew Misak are the co-founders and managing partners of Pieroguys Pierogies. As students at the University of Kansas, these two food entrepreneurs realized that although the Polish delicacy, pierogies, were popular on the east coast, no one had ever heard of them in Kansas. So, they put together a business plan and opened their first retail & wholesale location in the City Market. Now, they have inked a deal to take over the old Dog Nuvo space in the Crossroads, hoping to gain more of a late-night crowd for their cheese and potato-filled dumplings. You’ll spend around $5 for a half dozen of these delicious dumplings. USE: your fingers, Pierogies are the perfect finger foods for little fingers, making them family friendly.

Looking forward to hitting up Pierguys--it's nice to have an option beyond freezer pierogies.

I was lucky enough to join in on a Yelp event that the Pieroguys held recently. Had a great time. Everyone there was so nice and the Pierogies were delicious! Can't wait to see them in the Crossroads!

I believe that in Kansas there are many steak houses there available just whenever you would to eat a good one. The one here I suppose is just new that I have not seen this place when I went here just last year.
